OPML checker
Upload the OPML file another reader exported, or paste its contents. We list every feed in it and say which ones work, which fail, which moved to a new address and which are listed twice. Nothing is stored, and you do not need an account.
What the checker does
An OPML export from another reader is usually years old. Some of its feeds have moved, some have died, and some are in the file twice under different addresses. The checker reads the file and says, for each feed, what Inoreader knows about it.
Working
Inoreader follows the feed and its checks succeed, or a live check just did.
Failing
Inoreader's checks fail, with the reason: a 404, a timeout, a block.
Moved
The feed answers with a redirect that Inoreader follows; the new address is the one to keep.
Duplicate
The same feed is in the file twice, under http and https, with and without www, or with a trailing slash.
Unchecked
A feed nobody in Inoreader follows that did not get one of the live checks. Its report link checks it on its own.
How to export an OPML file
| Reader | Where the export is |
|---|---|
| Feedly | Account settings, OPML, Export |
| The Old Reader | Settings, Import/Export, Export OPML |
| NewsBlur | Account, Manage, Export OPML |
| Feedbin | Settings, Import/Export, Export OPML |
| NetNewsWire, Reeder, other apps | File menu, Export Subscriptions |
| Inoreader | Preferences, Import/Export, Export |
What to do with the list
Keep the working feeds, replace the moved ones with their new address and drop the duplicates, then import the file. Inoreader imports the file as it is and keeps the folders, so cleaning it first is optional; the checker only shows you what you would import.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an OPML file?
OPML is the file format feed readers use to export and import a list of feeds. Every reader can write one and read one, so it is how you move your subscriptions from one reader to another. It is XML, with one outline element per feed and nested outlines for folders.
How does the checker know whether a feed works?
Inoreader checks three million feeds every day. A feed in the file that Inoreader already follows is answered from those checks: when it was last checked, whether it answered, and where it moved if it moved. Feeds Inoreader does not know get a live check, a few per file, and the rest are listed as unchecked.
Why are some feeds unchecked?
A live check is a request to the publisher, so the checker makes at most twenty per file and at most two per website. Every unchecked feed has a link that runs the full report for it.
Can I import the file into Inoreader?
Yes. Create a free account and import the same file from Preferences, or, when you are signed in, from the Import page. Inoreader keeps the folders and skips the duplicates.
Is the OPML checker free?
Yes. It is free and needs no account. The file is read once and not kept.
